The Dutch Cottage, although not in the town centre, should not be missed. It is situated about a quarter of a mile down Crown Hill on the left hand side.
It was purchased by public subscription in 1964 and is managed by Rochford Council and treated as a Council tenancy.

The cottage was completely restored in 1984 and it can be visited on Wednesday afternoons by prior arrangement with Rochford District Council on 01702 318150 or http://www.rochford.gov.uk/leisure__tourism/events_and_attractions/dutch_cottage.aspx
The history of the building is obscure. It dates from the 18th century and an octagonal timber framed and plastered structure. It is one of three such cottages in South East Essex, the other two being on Canvey Island. During the renovation work some very interesting wall tiles were found behind the fireplace.
