The Chamber was founded around 1970 when several prominent local businesses realised there was a need for their interests to be represented with a common voice.

Over the years membership has fluctuated but currently stands around 50, consisting of independent shop-keepers, branch managers of the chain stores, and businesses from the service sector such as accountants and solicitors.

The Chamber acts as a link between these businesses and the Rayleigh Town Council, Rochford District Council, local Police, Public Transport providors and other national agencies. It carries out joint marketing initiatives on behalf of its members.

Throughout the year the Chamber raises funds by promoting concerts and High Street activities to support the Christmas Lights Committee. In 1999 its efforts resulted in a cheque for over £1100 being presented.

Informal meetings are held quarterly, with a wide variety of guest speakers who are chosen to provide something of interest to all sectors of business in Rayleigh.
